"The Reservoir of Kindness," Acrylic on Card Stock, A3 size

"From my earliest memories, art has been a quiet but constant companion, a way to make sense of the world's beauty and mystery. As a child, I was captivated by the genius of Leonardo da Vinci—his boundless curiosity, and seamless blending of art and science. Yet one piece that has stayed with me most is Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night, with its swirling skies that seem to pulse with emotion and cosmic wonder. It reminds me that even in turmoil, there is transcendent beauty waiting to be seen.

My own artistic journey began young: as a child, one of my pieces earned a medal at a San Francisco art exhibition, a small but thrilling validation that encouraged me to keep creating. Life, however, led me down a different path. I became a biochemist, spending decades in laboratories where precision and discovery defined my days. There, I discovered an unexpected synergy—my artistic sensibility informed my scientific work. I became a creator of innovative products, marrying aesthetic intuition with rigorous science to design solutions that were both functional and beautiful.

Now, in retirement, I have returned fully to the wellspring of art. After a long scientific career, I find myself craving the nourishment that only creative expression provides—for my mind, body, and soul. In the rush of modern life, we so often skim the surface of existence, overlooking the profound principles that underpin our being: connection, vulnerability, resilience, and grace. Art invites us to pause, to linger, to let those deeper truths seep in amid the daily hustle.

This body of work emerges from a personal transformation. After a decade of prioritizing others' needs over my own, I embarked on a journey of self-reflection, humility, and gentle reclamation. I now embody what I call the "Reservoir of Kindness"—a deep inner wellspring filled through self-love and compassion, not despite scrutiny or past sacrifices, but because of them. Self-love and humility are not opposites; they are intertwined, each sustaining the other.

Through painting, I explore these themes, inviting viewers to stop, reflect, and connect with the quiet profundities of life. Art, for me, is sustenance, healing, and a way to honor the fullness of being human.

This piece explores our personal capacity to give from a place of genuine abundance. Each of us carries an unseen reservoir of emotional and physical needs—some deeper than others—that requires gentle, consistent care. Yet in an era that constantly demands we do more, become more, summon greater strength and power to emulate lives that aren’t truly ours, we often neglect these inner reservoirs.

The price of abandoning our own needs in pursuit of endless achievement is kindness itself. We gradually lose the ability to be kind to ourselves, and in turn, to others. This widespread neglect has become an epidemic, quietly eroding the possibility peace in our world."
