Artist Feature and Interview

Bogna Woskowicz
(Poland)

About the Artist

"I am an artist who is mostly focused on painting, but also on sculpture and printmaking. I have graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, majoring in painting. The main focus of my works is landscape and its various interpretations. I believe that a painting creates a narrative that cannot be translated or transposed into words; it becomes its own self describing language."

🎤Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?🎤

"I draw inspiration from the world that surrounds me and the world that emerges in my mind.

When I create realistic, or even photorealistic landscapes, I am usually interested in depicting a specific kind of beauty - the one hidden in mundanity and triviality, often overlooked or even frowned upon; the second direction would be the works that I often call combined, as their main subject gravitates towards showing my internal world - by merging and juxtaposing objects, memories, fears, thoughts, and dreams and putting them in a landscape that somewhat corresponds to reality and eventually obtaining illusory, dreamy, and illogical pieces.

I believe that I am a person that visualises a lot or rather believes that visual art creates a separate narrative beyond verbalisation or description; I always start with a drawing."

🎤What has been your biggest challenge working as a professional artist?🎤

"I believe that being a professional artist creates a paradox of freedom - although it seems to be a very casual path, it requires a lot of discipline and brings a lot of uncertainty and rejection - and the latter is, in my opinion, the biggest challenge.

I think that by being persevering, I have become stronger - or at least I have been trying to become."

🎤Have you ever experimented with other mediums? 🎤

"Yes, painting is the main area of my artistic practice and also the medium that, for some reason, feels as the closest and most natural to me.

However, I adore working with sculpture and printmaking— especially intaglio and lithography— and I plan to continue my
endeavours."

🎤Do you start with a clear vision when you work,
or does the piece evolve as you begin to create?
 🎤

"I do, as I mentioned, I think in pictures, thus I always have a clear vision of my work, but I accept and, very often, welcome evolution - sometimes some alterations happen."

🎤If you could give your younger artist self a piece of advice, what would it be? 🎤

"Perhaps that’s the toughest question to answer, as knowing myself, it’s rather dubious whether I would follow my own piece of advice.

But I believe it would be to not be discouraged and to keep creating what resonates with you; nonetheless, it’s a piece of
advice that I also give to myself and to others now."
